LIL B DELIVERS INTRIGUE & INFLUENCE W/ BLACK KEN – LOOKING BACK ON 2017 & BEYOND
BY JOHN WHITMAN, WRITER / EDITOR IN CHIEF – SHADOWBOX MVMNT / STAFF
PHILOSOPHY & SWAGGER
Brandon Christopher McCartney, professionally known as Lil B – AKA The BasedGod, is an American rapper and social activist from one of Cali’s most eclectic and powerful cities – Berkeley, California. Through th years, and equally from the jumpstart, Lil B has organically developed his own comprehensive style – crafting change while spreading his artistic wings. Lazer focused in (and out) of the pocket, Lil B always appears to be driving straight through his own “lane”, and keeping on task with the spiritual and creative agenda he has set forth. His sounds are harmonically diversified via several genres, from Trip and Hip Hop to Indie rock, Gospel and Trap. Yet he never fails to unite his melodic emotion, and deliver bomb tracks on rotation.
THUMP & BASE
“Based”, a term by which translates not only the essence of the “dynamite thump” Lil B’s inventive energy initiates when he steps to the stage and microphone; in the same fashion, it speaks to the “base” of his musical lifestyle – one that grants unconditional approaches to optimism, hope, relation, and tolerance. On a universal level, the “base” stays rooted within his own personal grasp on transcendence and community, yet it may reach the “record book” masses as / when Lil B sees fit.
MIX & TAPE
Lil B has released a variety of albums, mixtapes, and singles including Rain in England (2010). On August 17, 2017, Lil B released Black Ken, which was claimed to be his “first official mixtape.” This stellar act of artistry reached number 24 on the “Top Heatseekers” chart and number 44 on the “Independent Albums Chart” for the week of September 2, 2017. As we look back in the same light under which we aim forward, amazing beats and sounds are timeless, as are the stories that assist in the creative process.
Black Ken is a reminder that we must always stop, and listen. From here we simply say….. Base out – this mixtape is explosive and artistically versatile with an electric feel un-replicated, and only achieved if you take the entire journey through Black Ken (Soundcloud Reference Below). As Pitchfork brilliantly stated: “Years of online myth-making have culminated with Lil B’s masterpiece Black Ken, 27 tracks of deep funk and hyphy that finally define the mercurial Based God”. We like to start out with tracks “West Coast” and “Rawest Rapper Alive”. How you begin this journey is up to you, and we guarantee zero regrets –
LIL B & INFLUENCE
With so much controversy and hype evolving amongst the cloud generation of “rapid growth” rap, aside from all of the dilution imposed, if you check up on all of the up and comers, making a name for themselves through artistic measures in the rap game, listen to who they are influenced by………..you best believe Lil B is on the top of their list. Please enjoy additional content and music on behalf of Lil B – The Based God.
