Wooden Wisdom consists of Elijah Wood (@woodelijah ) and Zach Cowie (@turquoisewisdom), a DJ Set if you will, I call it another profound “PHUTURE / KLASSIC” movement in the game of music and live performance. They played at San Francisco’s eclectic venue Harlot on Friday night. They were accompanied by opening sets from Andy Cabic (VETIVER) and Ozgood (AFROLICIOUS). They stamped my mind with trance much needed..
With an article tagline that involves a familiar and respected name like Elijah Wood, you may assume that we wanna reference the craft of acting, and cinema…all of the talents that Mr. Wood, by the way, handles ever so well. I saw The Good Brother, then proceeded to see The War, and so forth and so forth..the kid had skills early on, still does – but let’s talk music. Lets talk trance and vinyl, let’s talk “put your phones away people, it’s so much better”..I heard from the distance while stepping outside. I agree – it’s about time we start rallying to open more record shops again, at least that’s what I felt when I heard those words. A record shop offers experience….
I jumped from the W Hotel in San Francisco (@WHotels) to the Harlot SF (@HarlotSF) with great anticipation to experience new…2016 is fresh and clean……a new angle, a new vibe, and most definitely always time for some new live trax to zone out to. My intention was to hit the floor hard, experience, execute, and get back to that room to write a quick piece to simply share musical energy via social journalism on our network…. I have gratefully listened to some of their music online, sample here:
To me, this brilliant actor has taken, what seems to be a lifelong passion of his to another level, which is dope at all angles. That’s my take and forgive me if I am wrong. In any regards, artistic passion proved, and then some. Passion by not only Mr. Wood, but equally by Wooden Wisdom partner Zach Cowie. The two feed off each other’s energy in a manner that is organically in unison… I stepped into the trance I needed, offered up by Harlot SF, a stylish and creative venue that delivers an environment embodied by the profound and electric essence of “underground” tactic. Mind you, this atmosphere walks hand in hand with the incredible music they haven proven to deliver to San Francisco and the Bay Area.
When the duo got into their set / it didn’t matter what it was – where I was – or where I was going – this tablet of Wooden Wisdom was taking me backwards & forwards.. trance…what…and then I heard it. I’m not sure if I remember it because it was that mind-blowing….With Harlot’s sound system so clean with bass dropping up in my reason – I heard something of this sorts…”PUSH UPS – PULLING – STRETCHING” was speaking sexy obedience circa 83′ on repeat, to a beat that simply shut my mind down. If anyone knows the lyrics or song, I just know I remember the experience…it was radical..
We’re stepping into a digital age that is indescribable. This track they mixed and performed, rocked that distinct rhythm in my head. Friday night this rhythm was delivered by vinyl spinning at creative measures, that are crossbred, and synthesized across past, present, and what we know as tomorrow. Rhythms like this permit me to respect, recollect, and remember all that is influential (and hot, daring, scary, sexy, fun, and exciting) across the life I have lived, and the one I am grateful to step into through each sunrise passing. I thank Wooden Wisdom for bringing this effect within their musical journey….what they’re doing is fun, sexy, classic, future, and very, very, influential in my opinion….
I respectfully speak of this “Future / Classic” state of music production and performance. For myself, from an artistic standpoint, laying ground for the future, involves respect and appreciation for the “classic” past (and present) that has rooted the drive in each of us. I have been meaning to check this venue out for some time now, and I had a strong interest to see Wooden Wisdom live. This I got a chance to do. I am ever so grateful.
I’m looking forward to getting back to the Harlot for another show. I’m a junkie for that “district rhythm”, offered up by not only Wooden Wisdom, but through so many of the ‘Disc Jockeys’ in the world blending mixes from vinyl to digital in their own right. Music like I heard the other night gives me, the fan, an experience. Love and respect to all of chemists out there who blend to a “Future / Classic” state of tone..
Shadowbox built its mission and platform in an effort to systematically recalculate and rebuild the declining worth of creative value. We drive to bring back the sense of exclusivity again, lost in a shitstorm of non-exclusive measures as a sweet result of digital saturation.
When I heard “PUSH UPS-PULLING-STRETCHING”, at that moment, the blend went so fucking deep, like on some “subsonic – time machine – ski goggle – super fly – sexy jazzercise video rewind – robotic – blond hair – silver glove – underground – leg warmer-shit”, and I was bouncing to a symbiosis of influence within that moment, per the music they created. At that moment and as I move forwards and backwards, this was some “Future/Classic” jamming on a whole other level. Put your phones away kids, please don’t miss out on the experience..
