SLOW & LOW: NORTHAMPTON’S SLOWTHAI STAMPS NORTH AMERICA FOR HIS U.S. TOUR – BY SHADOWBOX MVMNT
It’s pure dynamite, that’s our opinion. Regardless of whether he raps solo, or drops one of his A&R textbook production “collabs” with notable talents including Mura Masa (please see the “Doorman” video below), Skepta (please see the “Inglorious” video below), Flume, Kwesi Darko, Tyler the Creator, and Brockhampton (whom he is now touring with as well); our feeling stands firm, his music is pure dynamite. His well deserved advancements up the ranks of alternative music (covering various genres from grime point gangster rap to trip hop and heavy punk); aligned with his noteworthy selections per the BBC’s Sound of 2019 Poll, and NME’s NME 100 list; and cooked up with acclaims from publications such as DIY, Vevo and Metro, are the transparent measures by which truly validate Slowthai’s creative position and inventive expression in the game. He’s a timeless artist that is starting to influence large fanbases and listeners on a “future / classic” level. And whom are we speaking about you ask? The “dynamite” we’re preaching on, refers to what we feel and hear, when its ignited by none other than the versatile UK Rapper Slowthai, whom artistically explodes with raw authenticity, hypnotic bars, heavy grime flows; and the creative spirit of tasteful anarchy.
Born in 1994, Slowthai is an English rapper from Northampton, Northamptonshire. He attended Northampton Academy, before heading to Northampton College, where he studied a Level 3 BTEC in Music Technology. His scholastic years fostered more exposure to various genres of music, and even better, it permitted frequent access to a friend’s house nearby, which hosted an underground studio. This cultivated environment exposed the trades of production and recording in real time, giving Slowthai the proper space to transition into a full time artist. He eventually downloaded a copy of FL Studio, proceeded to release countless tracks and an “extended play” under Bone Soda, and the passion continued.
Slowthai resides in Kensington, West London; and his home town of Northampton. Today, the 24-year-old MC is swiftly evolving into a legendary lyricist, whom notably flips painful personal experiences and societal/political anguish, into melodic experiences embodied by the edgy and introverted culture of Grime, yet rooted in the extroverted ability to flex the microphone outside of the stereotypical box, to spit confidence instead of comfort. Simply put, there isn’t a box big enough for a musician like Slowthai. He wasn’t born to be confined, yet bred to become an artist for this generation; that must remain free to diversify his message, switch up his mode, and adjust his microphone mentality accordingly. We look forward to supporting Slowthai’s North American tour hitting San Francisco, CA this month; and equally we strive to be front and center upon his return to support Brockhampton’s Tour at the Frost Theater in Stanford – Palo Alto, CA in November 2019.
